The security guard was doubtful.
“You want to take this empty can home??!”
There was a recycling bin next to him, and he was trying to get me to toss the can into it.
I guess he didn’t know my plan.
My plan is to take that Twins beer can home and put it next to the can celebrating America’s 250th year and my Twins baseball cap. I’ll dutifully record the disappointing loss inside the cap and have my daughter, Madeline, and my son-in-law, Vaughn, sign it.
Then I’ll put them in my dusty shop somewhere, and whenever I see them, I’ll remember a hot, muggy evening, the taste of a bratwurst (with onions and kraut, of course), the first sip of a beer, and a delightful evening spent with a young couple enjoying their lives, while my bride of 39 years, Libby, and I enjoyed ours.
Someday, somebody will throw those things away, and I certainly don’t blame them. The only reason I have them is to remember a snapshot of a beautiful summer’s day.
You wanna know the secret to a good life?
Do the best you can to remember it.
Endless summer.
