In my front yard is an Ohio buckeye tree. Since I live in South Dakota, this tree is obviously lost.
This time of year, I get a lot of comments about it because it looks a little like an orange tree—except instead of oranges, it’s covered in strange green orbs.
Break one open, and inside you’ll find a smooth, shiny brown nut called a buckeye. (This might explain why the Ohio State Buckeyes mascot looks the way he does.)
For the next couple of weeks, the squirrels will frantically cut them down and haul them off to some unknown location.
Me? I take about six of them, remove the husks, and put them in a dish to dry.
This winter, I’ll put them in a decorative bowl as a conversation piece.
Guests are always intrigued: “What are these?”
…Now you know!
Have you ever seen one of these trees?
Endless summer.
