It usually starts August 1.
Libby says, “I suppose we should take the bunting down.”
I nod.
We do nothing.
We find ways to postpone this simple task—to delay the inevitable.
Truth is, we LIKE the bunting.
It makes our plain Victorian house look a little more grand, and when we pull into the driveway, we admire it for a bit.
But now the sedum is turning pink—a sure sign of fall—and it’s time to bundle up the sun-starched bunting and put it back into the container labeled “4th of July.”
Oh well.
Pulling in the dock.
Winterizing the cabin.
Packing away the swimsuits and pool toys.
We all have that one task that means the season really is over.
