Endless Summer: My Hero!

by | Jul 28, 2026 | I Like That Story

One hundred degrees and humid is not the best day to have the air conditioning go out.

Mind you, for the first 30 years of my life, we didn’t have air conditioning. We used box fans, attic fans, and sprinkled water on our pillows to manage the insufferable heat.

I changed my mind in 2001, when I called my friend Collin Kleinsasser to pull me into the new era.

Collin was the guy who showed me how to put ductwork into my 130-year-old house 10 years earlier.

Anyway, now his son Mitch answers the phone, and Nathan is usually the guy who makes the call.

(Inside stuff: The HVAC guys don’t really care about your laundry or carpet, but if you haven’t sprayed the milkweed off your AC unit or changed your filter in the last year, you will get a look of quiet dismay.)

But the best part of the whole deal was when Nathan asked if I had the second book in my Dead Air series. He wanted to buy a copy!

“I like the way you weave small-town living into the story. I feel like I’ve met most of your characters in my day-to-day living.”

(More inside stuff: If you want to get on any author’s good side, give some unsolicited praise for their work.) 😉

Every story has a satisfying punch line. Here’s mine: The name of the second book is Dead Heat.

So, if summer for you is a good book, what titles have you read so far?
