Do You Wanna Play?

“Get off my land!”

That was a common thing we kids would shout at the neighbor kids whenever a spat broke out.

We must’ve heard it from our parents, since we knew very little about property rights and certainly had no role in the purchase of said property. 😆

Time rolls on, and now we own property sandwiched between manicured lawns and rows of boring crops.

A youthful imagination can’t do much with those two things.

But!

If there’s a spot of woods or wilderness or an abandoned lot, a young mind can run free.

When neighbors moved nearby, we decided our backyard could be that “other place”—where children could play with balls and bats and things just lying around.

And sometimes, after they leave, we see clues of what their imaginations made.

Our willow tree out back was taken down last year, and we’re waiting for some wet weather to burn the wood.

In the meantime, Libby found this teepee, which makes us smile and remember what we “got up to” back in the days when a friend could be made with a simple question:

“Do you wanna play?”

Happy to be part of the process. 🙂

Endless Summer

P.S. Where did you play when you were young?
